You may know already that we’re big believers in the power of mentoring. For young people and senior professionals alike, a mentoring relationship can be very beneficial.
The benefits of a mentor to a young person are obvious. When you’re trying to kick-start a career, chatting to an ‘old hand’ can be invaluable. They’re able to share advice for getting that all-important foot in the door and how to keep it there once it’s in. Of course, a good mentor can often be relied upon to share contacts and potential leads – otherwise known as gold dust! It’s often forgotten just how many job vacancies are filled by employers calling on their professional and person contacts. In a tough job market especially, a mentor can help a young person to meet the right people.
But what about the benefits to the mentor themselves? There are a number of reasons why someone would want to become a mentor. First off – it can be very rewarding. Making contact with juniors in their industry and talking about their development can be a great way for mentors to remind themselves about why they joined their industry in the first place. It can also be a great boost in both profile and ‘kudos’ terms. Remember, senior professionals are likely to be candidates again at some point, and mentoring activities can be a brilliant addition to a covering letter.
It’s for these reasons that we are keen to put people together. The job market can be a difficult place to be at the moment, and we know that there are thousands, if not millions, of young people who would gain a huge amount form the chance to talk to a ‘wise owl’ from their chosen industry.
Are you a ‘wise owl’ or a young candidate/professional? We want to help put you together. Please get in touch to be part of our mentoring project. Send us an email at graham.ruddick@idtalentdirect.com
