Should Recruitment Be More Like Marketing?

21-Sep-11 12:59

Recruitment already has big similarities with marketing. Why? In short – because it’s about ’selling’ a position to the right candidate. It’s about finding the right medium to communicate through. It’s about networking, it’s about using social platforms online, it’s about getting the word out about an opportunity as effectively as possible.

However, we think that there is one significant way in which recruitment is not like marketing. In reality, candidates tend to get a far worse experience from brands they apply to than they would if they were customers of that brand. With the number of applications for each position often reaching triple figures – many candidates don’t even hear back to be told that they’ve been unsuccessful. This can be hugely demoralising to candidates, especially when they’ve often put hours of work into an application pack.

In some ways, we think that the prevalence of social media is enhancing these bad aspects. With more and more channels opening up for brands to engage with their customers – many of these aren’t being maximised in terms of recruitment as they are for customer service and marketing.

Here’s where we’d like your input. Do you think that brands should treat their recruitment processes more like they treat their marketing processes? This would be a significant behavioural change – but we think that the recruitment industry might just be a much nicer place for candidates to be if they did.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Share them in the comments below.
