This time of year can be a very trying time for those in the job market; especially new graduates. Leaving university and getting a job for the first time can be extremely daunting. And of course, with less and less graduate schemes and opportunities available – new graduates are having to work harder than ever to get noticed.
If you are a new graduate, this is for you. We’ve put together a few tips to help you on your way.
Understand that you might have to be flexible
Whether it’s applying for a job in a part of the country you hadn’t considered before or thinking about applying for a slightly different role in the industry you’re looking at – it’s vital to be flexible if you want to succeed. Keep an open mind and be prepared to consider all opportunities.
Get on with it
We know it’s tempting to while away the summer days with friends – but too many graduates make this mistake. Many opportunities will come up straight away, and you may miss out to those graduates who have started their search straight away.
Be proactive
Job hunting can often be likened to a full time position in itself. Set yourself manageable targets and make sure you hit them. The average graduate has to apply to dozens if not hundreds of jobs before they get one – so the more proactive you are the better.
Ask your network
Don’t be afraid to ask around. Talk to friends and family and tell them what sort of opportunity you’re looking for. Often job openings are passed on by word of mouth, and you may find that someone you know is looking to recruit someone just like you.
Stay positive
It can be easy to feel negative about the process – especially when you’re not having any luck. But if you are able to stay positive this will show in your applications and your interviews and you’ll be in with a much better chance. We know it’s hard, but perseverance will get you there in the end.
